Healthy Living: Nutrition and Diet
At Unilever, we follow a simple yet effective strategy for nutrition: better products help people to enjoy good health and live better lives. That’s why Unilever Health offers up great tasting products that are made with healthy ingredients, providing customers with a variety of choices from our range of products that boast lower calorie counts and improved nutritional profiles, without compromising on taste and quality. This approach to healthy living is a unique part of our heritage.
We currently focus our efforts on three key areas where our portfolio and scale allow us to have the biggest impact: heart health, obesity and malnutrition.
Heart Health: Cardiovascular disease, which includes heart disease and strokes, is the second biggest killer in South Africa after HIV/AIDS. It is the leading cause of death, yet preventable with the help of a balanced diet and healthy lifestyle. Unilever has a long heritage of providing products that help people look after their heart health. We encourage people to make the right diet and lifestyle choices and we also have commitments to reduce salt and saturated fats.
Obesity: Excessive weight gain, including obesity, globally affects almost half of all adults and more than 40 million children under the age of five. We take our role seriously when it comes to assisting in the struggle against obesity through commitments that reduce calories and sugar in products, offering choice in portion sizes, and ensuring that our products contain nutrition labelling while also applying a global policy of responsible marketing for all of our foods and beverages.
Malnutrition: Millions of people around the world indulge in unbalanced diets that are lacking in essential micronutrients. In developing and emerging markets, our aim is to offer fortified foods at an affordable price which will bring them within the reach of as many people as possible. Our challenge is to reach more people, in more places, in a way that is economically viable.
