Resource Centre 6th African Nutrition Epidemiology Conference(ANEC VI)

The 6th ANEC congress took place in Accra, Ghana, 21-25 July. Unilever was a proud Gold Sponsor of the Congress.

In the context of Unilever's Sustainable Living Plan, the role of Unilever brands in improving the fat quality of the diet and in reducing salt intakes was highlighted.

On the topic of behavior change for better health, Unilever launched the African recipe book and presented on the South African salt reduction behavior change workshop, which was part of a global series, jointly organized by IUNS and Unilever.

Prof. Marius Smuts from the North West University


Short Cv for Marius Smuts


Marius Smuts became a Registered Nutritionist in 2012 with a backgound in Biochemistry since 1981. He compeleted his studies at the University of Stellenbosh and was an Assistant Medical Researcher during his studies.

Marius is particularly focused and interested in the role of essential fatty acids and their metabolites on growth and development, the efficacy of multi-micronutrient supplementation in infants from high-risk groups and the interaction between omega-3 and micronutrients during cognitive development.

He is part of both The Nutrition Society of South Africa (NCSSA: currently the president) and the International Society for the Study of Fatty Acids and Lipids (ISSFAL). He has had over 70 peer-reviewed scientific publications as first or co-author in his fields of interest and has also presented over 50 presentations at National congresses and over 50 International congresses as first or co-author.

Gladys Mugambi from the Kenyan Ministry of Health


After graduation, she worked as a District Nutritionist with Ministry of Health at Thika District for 10 years.

National coordinator Micronutrient Program including the development of guidelines on Vitamin A supplementation for children under five. Initiated supplementation

Initiated supplementation through Early Childhood Development centres. Developed a proposal for funding the National food fortification program. Worked as Deputy Head Division of Nutrition and National Food Fortification Project Manager Ministry of Health Kenya. Licensed and Currently the Registrar, Kenya Nutritionists and Dieticians Institute (KNDI)

Nazeeia Sayed is the Unilever Nutrition and Health manager for Africa


Nazeeia is a registered Dietician and proud mum of 7 year old daughter, Neha. She holds an MSc in Nutrition, and a Post graduate diploma in marketing management.

Nazeeia started off her career as junior scientist at the Medical Research Council in Cape Town where she worked on food composition data compilation. She then moved to the University of Kwa-Zulu Natal in the position of lecturer for 8 years. She joined Unilever 6 years ago & currently holds the position of Nutrition & health manager in R&D, and is also the nutrition team leader for Africa. Nazeeia is based in Durban, South Africa.
