The effect of salt on the human body is an extensively explored topic and Unilever is actively reducing salt in their foods while remaining committed to delicious and quality products.
At Unilever, we welcome dialogue regarding our products and what goes into them, so here are some frequently asked questions that can inform you on Unilever’s stance on salt consumption as well as salt in our products. These questions have been grouped into 4 categories, namely USLP/salt reduction commitments, salt reduction – product reformulation, salt legislation and local pledges, low salt intake and salt reduction and its impact on health.
These 4 general topics have been based on the following key messages:
- Dietary sodium reduction (e.g. via reduction in food products and eating habits) is considered to be one of the easiest to implement and is a cost-effective and efficient way to reduce the global burden of cardiovascular disease.
- At Unilever, we have already significantly reduced salt levels across our Foods portfolio globally. We are making reductions across our Foods portfolio, whilst maintaining excellent tasting products, to meet the target of 5 grams of salt per day, aligned with the recommendations of World Health Organization (WHO) by 2020.
- Potassium is an essential nutrient needed for maintenance of normal body functions, like a healthy blood pressure and is an essential part of the diet because it is not stored in the body. Fruit and vegetables, milk, grains and meat are good natural sources of potassium.
- Potassium salt added to foods as a salt replacement contributes to potassium intake, and modelling studies have shown that Upper safe levels of potassium (5-6g/d) are not exceeded (van Buren, 2016).
- Potassium salt is a safe food ingredient, as confirmed by regulatory authorities and international scientific bodies.
